Stavropol State Agrarian University deploys a biometric face recognition system from Speech Technology Сenter

20 February 2021 — The Stavropol State Agrarian University (SSAU) became the first university in Southern Russia to deploy a biometric face recognition system from Speech Technology Сenter.

This was a joint project implemented by Sberbank and SSAU. For several years, Sberbank has been the partner of the university, including for the implementation of the SSAU campus project.

The biometric face recognition system was installed and configured at the entrance points to the university. It is using Smart Tracker FRS machine learning and computer vision system, which can detect and identify visitors going through the turnstile. When the camera sees an individual, the biometric system runs a mathematical processing cycle to extract an image from the video stream and encode it into a biometric template containing unique characteristics of the face. This template is compared against the database of people with authorised access and, in the event of a match, the system opens the turnstile. As a result, access is provided only to a strictly defined group of people.

Alexey Chvanov, manager of the Stavropol branch of Sberbank: 'By now, the installation of equipment at the site is complete. SSAU is one of our long-term partners, and we are implementing a number of joint educational projects. The technologies of the Speech Technology Сenter will ensure not only convenient and quick access, but they will also enable it in a contactless way, which is important in the context of the current epidemiological situation. I am sure that the implementation of this project will address a number of issues related to security and day-to-day activities of the university'.

The face recognition system brings the educational institution's security to a new level. All employees and students must register in the system, which prevents unauthorised access to the premises of the university.

Professor Ivan Atanov, rector of SSAU: 'The Stavropol State Agrarian University is a unique educational institution. Our university includes several functional spaces, including academic buildings, dormitories, and two campuses located in separate areas. Such a large infrastructure required an extremely serious approach to ensuring its security. This is especially so, given the fact that it is a public facility with high volume traffic. Today, we have almost 18 thousand students and learners, and more than 1,000 employees. SSAU implemented the most advanced and effective solutions to ensure the protection of the facility and the security of its visitors. One of them is Smart Tracker FRS biometric face recognition system from the Speech Technology Сenter. The equipment demonstrated perfect results during its test runs'.

Dmitry Dyrmovsky, CEO of Speech Technology Center: 'Thanks to advanced algorithms, as well as the scale of the projects implemented by Speech Technology Сenter and our close integration with leading manufacturers of access control systems, all processes now take less than a second and have no adverse impact on the throughput of the turnstile. This allows for convenient, fast and contactless entry. Speech Technology Сenter was the first in the world to implement a face recognition system in a sports stadium and it now operates in 18 sports facilities, over 70 transport facilities, and in eight "Safe Cities". The deployment of our face recognition system as part of a campus project could be the starting point for more campus projects throughout Russia. These not only involve the already implemented use case, but also others that are especially relevant today, such as distance exams and remote presentations of qualifying papers. We are happy to be part of a fundamental process for the entire education sector'.
